The Town of Shaftsbury has received another donation of Frank Howard artwork. This most recent piece, entitled “Coming Home”, will join several other Frank Howard paintings adorning the walls of the Cole Hall conference room.
“Coming Home” was donated by Miriam S. Sargent of Manchester, NH. Shaftsbury Selectboard Chair Tim Scoggins was contacted in the summer of 2020 by Ms. Sargent’s daughter, Miriam Simmons. They arranged for Mr. Scoggins to meet Ms. Simmons husband Roger in Dorset to receive the painting.
According to Ms. Simmons, the painting hung in her mother’s living room for decades. She and her husband stopped and admired it at a Mendon gallery many times before they bought it.
Frank Howard (1924-2013) painted for over sixty years in the area of Shaftsbury and Bennington. A large body of his work was show at the Left Bank in the summer of 2019. That exhibition was curated by Tom Fels of North Bennington. Tom Fels donated the other pieces of Frank Howard art on display at Cole Hall.
Cole Hall is currently closed due to COVID. The Town is looking forward to returning to normal operations so that the public can enjoy this collection of fine art from “Shaftsbury’s artist.”
