Announcement from the Delinquent Tax Collector
Posted: October 5, 2026
I am fully aware of the property tax increases that some of our residents are facing due to the calculations done at the state level, in combination with the reappraisals. It is for this reason that I have decided to temporarily adjust my delinquent tax penalty rate for the 2026 Shaftsbury property taxes that are due on November 10th, 2026.
As the elected Delinquent Tax Collector, the state has set statutes as guidelines to help me with my collections. According to those statutes the allowable penalty charge is limited to 8%, and this has been the rate in Shaftsbury for many years. For this year only, any 2026 property tax principal that is delinquent after the voted deadline of November 10th, 2026, at 5 pm, will receive only a 4% penalty, valid until December 31st, 2026. On January 1st, 2027, any principal balances left will be charged the remaining 4%. I know that this will not alleviate the hardships, but it will hopefully lessen the burden for those who are unable to pay in full by the due date.
Please know that you are urged to pay whatever you can by the November 10th due date because you are only charged fees on your unpaid principal balance.
If you have any question regarding delinquent taxes, please reach out to me at (802) 379-2299 or
