John G. Huntington/Eliza A. Mattison

John G. (Grant) Huntington was the son of Algernon Olin and Sarah Elizabeth (Niles). According to his headstone he was born 1 June 1868. The Federal Census of 1880 reports John (12) was living in Shaftsbury with his parents Olin A. (43) and Sarah H. (34). Also, in the household were siblings: Alice S. (15), Mary G. (13), Sidney O. (8), who's name appears on BLOCK: 16, Charles H. (5) and Irene B (3). Another member of the household was Olin's older brother, Edward R. Huntington (48). The same year's Census shows the household of John's future wife, May/ Mary P. Barton (12) living in Shaftsbury with her parents; Myron (59) and Abi E. Barton 47). Also, in the household was Myron's father, Hiram Barton (85).

John marries Mary P Barton BLOCK: 25 in Shaftsbury on 16 December 1891. Mary's parents, Myron and Abbie E. (Fisk) Barton, share BLOCK: 25. Her father, Myron, was the town clerk at the time, and he signed their marriage licenses. On his license John was a farmer but, in later years he became an auctioneer. In 1888, when John's name was added to the quilt, he would have been 20 and single. Mary gives birth to a daughter 8 November 1892. The unnamed infant dies two days later from “want of vitality”. As Town Clerk, Mary's father Myron, recorded his granddaughter's death. It appears they have no other children.

When the census of 1900 was completed John (31) and Mary (32) had been married for about nine years and were still living with John's father, Olin (62). The census of 1920 still names Olin (82) as head of household and May/Mary (52) in the household. John's occupation was listed as “arestanure” (auctioneer?).

When the census of 1930 was taken John (61) was one of 51 patients living at the Brattleboro Retreat. John died October 24, 1937 (age 69) at the Retreat, suffering chronic myocarditis and manic depressive psychosis (depression for 12 years). Mary died 16 January 1940 at the age of 72 years, 3 months, and 17 days from a cerebral hemorrhage.

John and Mary Parks (Barton) Huntington are buried in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery with John's parents Algeron Olin Huntington (1837-1925) and Sarah Elizabeth (Niles) Huntington.

*Other documentation and information appears in the biography of May P. Barton. BLOCK: 17

Eliza A. (Mattison) Percy was born in Shaftsbury 5 November 1863. Her parents were Joseph T. and Ann (Tinkham) Mattison. She died 20 April 1937 at the age of 73. In 1888 she would have been about 25. She marries Grant W. Percy but this researcher was unable to locate their marriage license. Their only child Raymond was born in 1899 so it is assumed they might have been married in 1898. In 1888 she would still be going by her maiden name of Mattison. Place of burial is unknown.
