Every year Vermont's towns appropriate hundreds of thousands of dollars to support social service agencies that provide services to their communities.
In order to request funding for your service organization, please submit the Community Appropriation Application form to email@example.com with subject line "Community Appropriation" and your organization name. Deadline for requesting an appropriation for next fiscal year is December 1st.
If you received funds last year you must submit a report detailing how the funds were used, specifically citing how the funds you received benefited the citizens of Shaftsbury. See details in the CA Town Report Request Letter.
You may request an appearance before the Select Board to discuss your appropriation request. This should be scheduled with the Town Administrator, during budget season in November or December. The Select Board has discretion to approve, deny or modify your request to appear on the ballot.
Alternatively, you can get your appropriation request on the ballot by submitting a petition signed by 5% of voters (about 150). Such petitions must be submitted to the Town Clerk before the end of January (approximately). Call the Town Clerk for the specific date. Such petitions may be submitted instead of applying to the Select Board, or subsequent to a denial or modification by the Select Board.
Be aware that it is the voters of Shaftsbury who ultimately decided whether an appropriation is made when they vote by Australian ballot on election day, in March of each year.
