Edgar Bowen/ Lydia Bowen (husband and wife)

Lydia Bowen was born 9 May 1859 to James Greenwood and Adelia/Delia (Andrew) Cole of Arlington. Her father was a carpenter. Find-a-grave records her as having at least five siblings but only three lived to adulthood. Charles H. Cole (1856-1933), Austia Cole (1862-1864), Etta B. Cole (1865-1865), Myron Cole (1872-1941), and Julia Ann (Cole) Elwell (1876-1949).

Edgar Whipple Bowen was born October 1856 in Shaftsbury to Jeremiah and Zilpha (Waite) Bowen. The was no record of his birth filed with a town clerk and it is unknown if he was related to any of the Whipples in Shaftsbury.

The census of 1870 taken in Hebron, New York documents Lydia (4) living with her father, James (37), mother Delia J. (32), brother Charlie N. (13) and four year old sister Dora.

The same 1870 Census taken in Shaftsbury records Edgar (13) living in Shaftsbury with his father Jeremiah (43), mother Zilpha (37) and two other siblings, Joseph (10) and Henrietta (8).

Edgar and Lydia marry 15 November 1877. At the signing of the quilt Edgar was 32, Lydia 29 and they had three children. In the course of their marriage they have a total of five. Adelia Zilpha (Bowen) Thayer (1878-1957), Caroline (Bowen) Bentley (1880-1961), Roy Edgar (1887-1952), Etta Belle (Bowen) Cole (1889-1970) and Cole James (1897-1928).

The census of 1900 records Edgar W. Bowen (43) and Lydia A. (41) and their five children, Delia (21), Carrie M. (19), Roy E. (13), Etta B. (11) and Cole J. (2) living in Shaftsbury. Edgar's occupation was listed as farm laborer.

Edgar dies first in 1918 at the age of 61-62. This researcher was unable to find a recorded death certificate. The Spanish flu was widespread in Vermont in 1918 and may have been the cause of his death. Lydia passes 30 January 1936 at the age of 76 from a cerebral hemorrhage. She was a widow for 18 years and lived with her son John (58) and his wife Angeline/Adeline (64) in Bennington on Dewey Street. Her obituary in the Bennington Banner reports her as living with her daughter, Mrs, Adelia Clements in South Shaftsbury and had been living with her for six year. The article further described her as having , "a retiring nature. Mrs. Bowen had always been devoted to her family and friends who had come to know her, an will remember her for her kindly manner and sweet disposition." Both Edgar and Lydia are buried in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery.
