Historic 1888 Shaftsbury Signature QuiltQuilt Block #50 - Quilt Signers:![]() Mrs. Richmond F. Galusha/Richmond F. Galusha (husband & wife) Mrs. Richmond F. Galusha's maiden name was Mary Evans Wheelock. She was the daughter of Nahum Wheelock and his second wife, Martha Slye. According to Mary E. (Wheelock) Galusha's headstone she was born 4 May 1830. She married Richmond Fisk Galusha on 6 September 1852. Mr. Richmond F Galusha was the son of Jonas (1803-1871) and Elizabeth/Eliza (Fisk) Galusha (1802-1877). This Jonas Galusha was not a governor of Vermont but, was a cousin to the Governor. Richmond was born 5 February 1830. When the quilt was signed in 1888 Mary and Richmond were both 58. Richmond F. had three siblings. Jonas E. Galusha (1838-1864), Francesca Caressa Galusha (1835-1851) and Seymour Galusha (1843-1880). Mary E. had half-siblings, but only two, Martin Wheelock (1814-1879) and David C. Wheelock (1818-1889) BLOCK: 53 lived to adulthood. The census of 1870 records Richmond and Mary both 40, living in Shaftsbury with their five children; Marcus (14) BLOCK: 32, Martha (10), Ella (6), Nellie (6) and David (8 months). In the 1880 Census Richmond F. and Mary, both 50 are still in Shaftsbury with only Ella (18) and David (10) living at home. Nahum F. Wheelock (38), son of her half-brother, Martin, is part of the household. There are no Vermont Federal Census for 1890 as they were destroyed in a fire. This would have been the last Census to document Richmond F's and Mary's union as Richmond passed 10 December 1898 at the age of 68 from Typhoid Pneumonia. This was ten years after the quilt was signed. According to Richmond's will Mary was allowed to stay in the family home and was given $50 a month on which to live. The Federal Census of 1910 is the last one Mary E Galusha (79) is identified as living alone in her own home. She was a widow for 30 years before passing on 11 July 1918 at the age of 88 from pneumonia. Both Richmond F and Mary E. (Wheelock) Galusha are buried in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery. Two of their five children and their families are buried in the family plot. NOTE: This family genealogy was quite confusing as Richmond's son, David R., names one of his sons Richmond Fisk Galusha while David's son names one of his son's Richmond R. Galusha. Richmand F's brother, Seymour's wife was also a Mary Galusha. records Richmond, Mary's parents Nahum (unknown-1866) and Martha (Slye) Wheelock (unknown-1849) are both buried in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery. Mary's half siblings: Mary Wheelock (1807-1811), David C. Wheelock (1818-1889), Martin (1809-1811), and Martin (1814-1879) are buried there in the Wheelock family lot. Nahum was married three times. His first wife was Mary (Corey) Wheelock (unknown-1823) whom he married in 1804. They had four children. His second wife was Martha (Slye) Wheelock, Mary E. Galusha's mother, whom he married in 1824. His third wife was the widow Hannah (Walling) Pitt Wheelock whom he married in 1849. Richmond's brother, Jonas E. Galusha (1838-1864) and Elizabeth (Fisk) Galusha, are buried in Waite Cemetery Shaftsbury, VT. Jonas E. Galusha served in the Civil War and was captured in Plymouth, N.C. He survived a battle but, was held in Andersonville Prison, Georgia, where he died 19 December 1864 in Annapolis, MD. "The Confederate government was unable to provide the prisoners with adequate housing, food, clothing, and medical care, Due to the terrible conditions, prisoners suffered greatly and a high mortality rate ensued." (1) Richmond was also the great grandson of Capt. Jonas Galusha, not Governor Galusha, who served in the Revolutionary War and nephew of Capt. David Galusha.
