Leverett N. Harrington was born 2 March 1851 in Shaftsbury, VT to Joel and Amy (Green) Harrington. BLOCK: 8. Mrs. Leverett Harrington's maiden name was Addie Elizabeth Whipple. She was born 12 December 1853. Her parents were Stephen Angel and Eliza (Hicks) Whipple. Addie and Anna Dunlop (BLOCK #4 of the quilt) were sisters. Their father was one of the founding fathers' of the Eagle Square Company. Leverett and Addie married on 27 May 1879. When Leverett and Addie were married he owned his own farm. His grandparents were Abraham and Electra (Galusha) Harrington. There are several photographs of Leverett in Ruth Levin's book, Ordinary Heroes: The Story of Shaftsbury (pg. 7) and with his sons Dennis and Joel Perle (pg. 47).

The census of 1870 documents Addie (17) as living in Shaftsbury with her father Stephen A. Whipple (53), mother Eliza (Hicks) Whipple (45) and Addie's siblings: Jessie (14), William (11), Anna (8) (BLOCK #4 of the quilt), Edward (6), Agnes (4) and Addie's grandfather, Eliza Whipple's father, Charles Hicks (75). Addie and Leverett lost their son, Dennis B. in 1897 at the age of 14, from a diabetic coma, shortly after the Ordinary Heroes photo was taken. The same census of 1870 records. Leverett (19) living with his parents Joel (47) and Anna (45) Harrington in Shaftsbury.

When the quilt was signed in 1888 Leverett would have been about 37 while Addie was almost 35. Addie passes away 5 March 1889, about four months after their names were placed on the quilt. Her death certificate states she died as a result of paralysis of the lung. She was only 35 years 2 months and 20 days old.

The census of 1900 shows widower Leverett (49) living in Shaftsbury with his daughters Jessie A. (19) and Ida N. (16) and his son Joel Pearl (13).

The census of 1910 records Leverett, now 51, as head of household living with his daughter Joddie B./Jessie A. (29), Pearl/J. Perle (22), and his wife Nelly (Rice) Harrington (21), and Leverett's granddaughter, Dorthy S. (1) daughter of J. Perle and Nelly. Also, in the household was Leverett's mother Amy (Green) Harrington (84).

By the time the Census of 1930 was taken Leverett was 79 and he was living on the Main Highway in Shaftsbury with his daughter Ida N. (45) who never married. Leverett died 13 November 1931 at the age of 80 from stomach cancer. Ida Nan died one month after him on 21 December 1931 at the age of 69 from cancer of the rectum.

Both Leverett and Addie are buried in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery along with their four children and spouses.
