Historic 1888 Shaftsbury Signature QuiltQuilt Block #8 - Quilt Signers:![]() Mrs. Amy (Green) Harrington was 63 years old in 1888 when the quilt was signed. She was born 13 January 1825 to Gideon (1799-1870) and Elizabeth “Betsey” (Harrington) Green (1799-1870). According to Find-a-grave and VT. U.S. Death Records she had thirteen siblings: Harrison (1841-1843), Hiram L. (1820- 1885) William H. (1814-1893), J. Milo (1818-1840), Norman (1834-1834), Eliza C. (Green) Chase (1822-1901), Hawley (1831-1909), Laura (Green) Winslow (1833-1921), Cynthia Alcestra (1829-1917), Elijah T. (1830- ), Simon (1838-1919), Loren E. (1842- 1922) and Ruth J. (1842-1922). Joel Harrington, was 65 in 1888 at the signing of the quilt. He and Amy had been married for 44 years. He was born 25 Feb. 1823 to Numan and Rhoda (Stratton) Harrington Sr. Joel's father, Numan/ Newman Harrington Sr. was the son of Abraham and Electa (Galusha) Harrington. Joel had seven siblings: Laura (1814-1814), Susan (Harrington) Hawkins (1815-1876), Charlotte (Harrington) Griffis (1817-1898), Sheldon (1820-1904), Numan Harrington Jr. (1827- 1895) (father of Nellie (Harrington) Corey BLOCK 16), Rhoda A. (Harrington) Stone (1829-1900) BLOCK: 39 and Edgar P. (1849-1852). Nellie Jane (Harrington) Corey, the person who won this quilt in a raffle, was Joel Harrington's niece, as her father, Numan Harrington and Joel Harrington were brothers. Joel and Amy marry on 31 December 1844. The Federal Census of 1850 records Joel (27) as a farmer in Shaftsbury with 1000 acres of land. At the time Amy was (25) and they had one son William (3). Their second son, Leverett N. was born in 1851. Their third son, Dennis G. was born in 1857 but unfortunately passed at the age of 5 from diphtheria. Joel registered for the U.S. Civil War draft when he was 40 on 20 June 1863. It appears he was not called to serve. According to the census of 1900 Joel (77) and Amy (75) had been married for 53 years and were still living in Shaftsbury. Their living children were: William Henry (1846-1916), and Leverett Nathanial (1851-1931) who appears on BLOCK: 15 with his wife Addie Elizabeth (Whipple) Harrington. Joel died 15 May 1905 from end stage kidney disease. (uremic coma catarrh of the bladder). His obituary reports him as being a prosperous and wealthy farmer and a highly respected citizen. He was a Republican and had been a selectman who represented the town of Shaftsbury in the State Legislature. Amy lived for another 10 years before her death on 8 September 1915 at the age of 90, from bronchitis. Buried in the family plot in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery are Joel, Amy, William and his wife Lucy Abigail (Galusha) Harrington, Leverett N. and his wife Addie Elizabeth (Whipple) Harrington and Dennis Harrington. |
