Byron C. Carey was the son of Abel and Elizabeth (Elwell) Carey. He was born 1 March 1844 in Shaftsbury.
When Bryon was 20 he enlisted 31 August 1864 into the Union Army. He was a private in Company E, 17th Infantry Regiment, VT. He was mustered out 17 May 1865 with a disability discharge.
Dora's maiden name was Endora Bentley. She was born 11 June 1854 to Daniel and Polly (Hamilton) Bentley in Sandgate. The census of 1870 details Dora (18) living in Sandgate along with her father, Daniel (63) and mother Rolly/Polly (53). Also, in the household are Dora's siblings: Willson Bentley (25),
Layton Bentley (22), Edwin Bentley (13) and Lenias Bentley (9). The Bentley family's relationship to William Pierce (40) and Adelaide Pierce (40) is unknown.
Bryon and Endora/Dora marry on 11 December 1871. In 1888 when Byron and Dora's names were placed on the quilt she would have been 34 and he was 44. They had been married for 17 years and had three children, Alma Alice BLOCK 9 of the quilt (1875-1950), Agnes (Carey) Cornell (1878-1963), and George Edwin also, on BLOCK 9 of the quilt (1883-1961).
In the Census of 1900 Byron (56) and Dora (45) are living in Shaftsbury and have been married for 28 years. All three of their children are living with them. Alana A./Alma Alice (24), Agnes L. (21) and George E. (18).
Dora passes first on 8 May 1916 in Sandgate at the age of 62 years 7 mos. and 0 days. Her cause of death was a cerebral hemorrhage. Byron passed four years later on 18 March 1920 from heart disease. His death certificate states he was a retired carpenter and was 76 years, 0 months and 17 days old.
Bryon and Dora are buried in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery along with his mother, Elizabeth (Elwell) Carey.
