Eliza Dyer was born in Shaftsbury in 1864 to Hawley and Betsey (Green) Green. She had two siblings, a brother John Milo Green (1851-1920) and a sister Laura A. (Green) Amidon (1860-1934).

The Federal census of 1880 shows Eliza (15) living in Shaftsbury with her parents, Hawley (49) and Betsey Green (47) and her sister Amelia (19). Her older brother, John Milo, was no longer a member of the household.

The same Federal Census of 1880 shows Eliza's future husband Charles E. Dyer (19) living with his parents Edward N. Dyer (56) and Mary A. (Niles) Dyer (23). Charles had two sisters Helen A (23) (BLOCK #12 of the quilt) and Anna H (21). There is also his younger brother Hilland N. (14) living with them in Shaftsbury.

As life long residents of Shaftsbury and members of the same church, Eliza and Charles must have know each other since childhood. They most likely went to the same one room school house. They marry on 17 November 1886. She is 22 and he is 25 years old. When the quilt was signed in 1888 they had been married for two years and have a daughter, Anna Mary (Dyer) Lewis. Their second child, Charles Jay Dyer isn't born until four years later in 1892. According to Charle's obituary they have another son Ned, who dies at the age of six.

Eliza died on 20 November 1897 (aged 32-33) from pneumonia. The census of 1900 records Charles (39) as a widower. His two children Anna Mary (12) and Charles J. (7) are living with him on Bank Street in Bennington.

Thirty years later in 1930 Charles (69) is living on Main Street in the home of his daughter Anna May Lewis (43) and her husband Dewitt Lewis (47), who have two children Pauline (22) and Dewitt (20).

When Charles passes away in Bennington on 7 December 1938 his occupation was listed as “in Real Estate”. He was 77 years 8 Months and 20 days old. His cause of death was suicide by shooting. He suffered from cerebral arteriosclerosis and intense neurasthenia. The symptoms of this condition were dizziness, dyspepsia, muscular aches or pains, tension headaches, inability to relax, irritability and sleep disturbance. He must have suffered greatly with these conditions.

Eliza and Charles are buried in Grandview Cemetery in Shaftsbury.
