Historic 1888 Shaftsbury Signature QuiltQuilt Block #3 - Quilt Signers:![]() Myron Harrington, according to his headstone, was born 29 October 1869. His parents were William Henry Harrington (1846-1916) and Lucy Abigail (Galusha) Harrington (1847-1914). Myron's grandparents were Joel and Amy (Green) Harrington BLOCK: 8. William and Leverett N. Harrington BLOCK: 15 were his uncle's. Amy B (Harrington) Bottum (1874-1937) was Myron's sister. The Federal Census of 1880 records William S. Harrington (34) living in Shaftsbury with his wife Lucy A (33) and children Myron J. (10) and Amia/Amy B. (5). William is a farmer who was born about 1846. The same Federal Census of 1880 documents Elsie H. (11), future wife of Myron, living in Shaftsbury with her father Ichobod N. Cross (53), mother Samalva (52), brother Hyde S. (24) and sister Jennie (23). Elsie's birth certificate confirms she was born 16 April 1869 to Ichabod Nathan Cross of Shaftsbury and Samalva (Sweet) Cross. Myron and Elsie marry on 12 September 1894. When the quilt was signed they were both 19 and it is assumed they were school mates, friends, neighbors, or sweethearts as their wedding didn't take place until four years after the signing in 1888. The Census of 1900 documents Myron (30) and Elsie (31) living on Parson Avenue, in Hoosick, N. Y. with their daughter Florence (1). He is a laborer in manufacturing. Perhaps at the Walter A. Wood Mowing and Reaping company who made reapers after the invention of John Deere tractors. The Federal Census of 1920 lists Myron (50) as head of household, Elsie, his wife (50) and three children Florence (21), Harry (16) and Roy (8). This census lists Myron's occupation as hotel clerk. The family owned their home and were living on West Street in Bennington. Myron died 30 July 1924 at the age of 54. His death is recorded in the New York Death Index. Elsie died 7 January 1951 at the age of 81 from a cerebral hemorrhage. Elsie never remarried and was a widow for 27 years. Both Myron J. and Elsie H. Harrington are buried in Grandview Cemetery in Shaftsbury in the Cross family plot along with their daughter Florence. There is a headstone for Lois (Harrington) Sanborn 1911- ? but, Elsie's obituary records Lois as being Mrs. Harry (Lois) Harrison of Safford, Arizona. Harry Myron Harrington was living in Schenectady, N. Y. Also, in the plot are Elsie's parents, Ichabod and Lovina Cross. Myron's parents, William and Lucy Harrington, are buried in Center Shaftsbury. |
