Bennington Roundabout Project
Bennington Roundabout Project
Current Updates:
DATE: July 25, 2025
From Monday, July 28, through Friday, August 1, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., two-way traffic will be maintained along the Vermont Route 67A (VT 67A) temporary southern alignment at the intersections with College Drive and Matteson Road/Silk Road. Intermittent single-lane closures with alternating one-way traffic controlled by flaggers may occur. Drivers should slow down and use caution.
On Tuesday, July 29, at approximately 8 a.m., College Drive and Matteson Road (Rice Lane) will fully close at VT 67A. Traffic will be maintained via signed detour routes. These closures will remain in place through approximately late September 2025. A supplemental Traffic Alert will be issued next week in advance of the closures.
Illustrated with orange arrows in the detour graphic below, drivers will be detoured from College Drive and Matteson Road at VT 67A to continue south on VT 67A. They will then turn right onto Vermont Route 279 eastbound and stay in the left lane to merge onto U.S. Route 7 northbound. Drivers will be directed to exit U.S. 7 at Exit 2, turn left onto Vermont Route 7A southbound, and then turn right onto Rice Lane to return to Matteson Road. To reach Bennington College (shown with red arrows), drivers will continue north on Matteson Road and turn left onto Harlan Road to reach the college campus (Jennings Drive/College Drive).

Drivers leaving Bennington College should take College Drive to Jennings Drive to Harlan Road and turn right onto Matteson Road (shown with dark blue arrows). From there, they should turn left onto Rice Lane and continue to the intersection with VT 7A (shown in light blue arrows). Drivers will then turn left onto VT 7A northbound, continue to the Exit 2 on-ramp for U.S. 7 southbound, and merge onto the highway. They should stay in the right lane to take the exit for VT 279 westbound. From VT 279, drivers will take the exit for VT 67A.
CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES: On Monday, crews are expected to finish installing the detour signage, and on Tuesday morning, close College Drive and Matteson Road at their intersections with VT 67A. Throughout the week, crews will excavate and install drainage infrastructure on the north side of VT 67A and along the College Drive and Matteson Road roadway approaches.
PROJECT UPDATE: The Vermont Agency of Transportation is constructing a single-lane, peanut-shaped roundabout at the intersections of VT Route 67A (VT 67A) at Silk Road and Matteson Road (Rice Lane) and VT 67A at College Drive (the entrance to Bennington College) to enhance safety, mobility, and access for all users. Additional improvements include pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, new drainage, landscaping, street lighting, and other roadway items.
The contractor plans to mobilize to the project area during the week of Monday, April 14, to set up temporary traffic control signs and devices, install erosion prevention and sediment control measures and temporary lighting, establish a soil staging area, and complete tree clearing. Work hours this construction season will be Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with potential Saturday work if needed.
The Bennington Roundabout Project will be constructed in phases, starting this spring through summer 2026. The contractor’s initial focus will be to construct all roadway approaches, including drainage and stormwater infrastructure, excavation, subbase, base course, bike path, sidewalk, curb, street lighting conduit and bases, and temporary pavement markings. The VT 67A southern roadway approach will be constructed first, followed by the VT 67A northern approach. Next, crews will construct the Silk Road approach, which will require a short-term closure and detour, expected in early to mid-summer 2025. Subsequently, the Matteson Road and College Drive approaches will be constructed, also requiring short-term closures and detours, anticipated for mid-summer to early fall 2025.
PROJECT DETAILS:
The project focuses on improvements to the intersections of VT 67A at Silk Road and Matteson Road (Rice Lane) and VT 67A at College Drive (the entrance to Bennington College). In addition, the project extends approximately 300 feet along VT 67A (easterly), 400 feet along VT 67A (westerly), 300 feet along Silk Road, 225 feet along Matteson (Rice Lane), and 100 feet on College Drive.
PROJECTED COMPLETION: Summer 2026
VTrans is enhancing safety, mobility, and access for all users by improving the intersections of VT Route 67A at Silk Road and Matteson Road (Rice Lane), as well as VT 67A at College Drive (the entrance to Bennington College). The centerpiece of
this project is the construction of a single-lane, peanut-shaped roundabout at these intersections. Additional upgrades will include new pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, improved drainage, landscaping, street lighting, and other roadway enhancements.
Construction is scheduled to occur from Spring 2025 to Summer 2026, primarily on weekdays during daytime hours. Traffic impacts are expected to
include alternating one-way traffic, short-term road closures, and detours on Silk Road, Matteson Road, and College Drive.
Ahead of construction in Spring 2025, the project team will release an update with detailed information about the construction phases, schedule,
and expected traffic impacts. Once construction begins, the team will provide weekly updates and supplemental traffic alerts to keep the public informed about progress and upcoming activities.
We will post updates here when we receive them.
