Bennington Roundabout Project
Current Updates:
DATE: Friday, September 26, 2025
TRAFFIC IMPACT AND DURATION: From Monday, September 29, through Friday, October 3, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., two-way traffic will be maintained on the Vermont Route 67A (VT 67A) temporary southern alignment near Silk Road, with intermittent stoppages for construction vehicles entering and exiting the work zones. Drivers should slow down and use caution.
College Drive and Matteson Road (Rice Lane) are closed at their intersections with VT 67A, with traffic maintained via signed detour routes. Illustrated with orange arrows in the detour graphic below, drivers on VT 67A at these intersections are being directed to travel south on VT 67A and onto Vermont Route 279 eastbound. From there, drivers will merge onto U.S. Route 7 northbound and take Exit 2 onto Vermont Route 7A southbound. They will continue to Rice Lane and then Matteson Road. To reach Bennington College (red arrows), drivers will continue north on Matteson Road to Harlan Road to Bennington College’s campus.
Drivers departing Bennington College should follow College Drive (Jennings Drive) to Harlan Road, then continue to Matteson Road (dark blue arrows). From there, they should turn onto Rice Lane and head north on VT 7A. Next, they will enter U.S. 7 southbound via the Exit 2 on-ramp, then take the exit for VT 279 westbound. From VT 279, they will exit onto VT 67A (light blue arrows).
CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES: Next week, crews will continue installing granite curb on the splitter islands along VT 67A, as well as on the approaches from College Drive and Matteson Road. Work will also include forming and placing concrete sidewalk ramps near College Drive. Additionally, crews will form, grade, and install reinforcing steel for the stamped concrete island located at the center of the peanut roundabout.
PROJECTED COMPLETION: Summer 2026
VTrans is enhancing safety, mobility, and access for all users by improving the intersections of VT Route 67A at Silk Road and Matteson Road (Rice Lane), as well as VT 67A at College Drive (the entrance to Bennington College). The centerpiece of
this project is the construction of a single-lane, peanut-shaped roundabout at these intersections. Additional upgrades will include new pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, improved drainage, landscaping, street lighting, and other roadway enhancements.
Construction is scheduled to occur from Spring 2025 to Summer 2026, primarily on weekdays during daytime hours. Traffic impacts are expected to
include alternating one-way traffic, short-term road closures, and detours on Silk Road, Matteson Road, and College Drive.
Ahead of construction in Spring 2025, the project team will release an update with detailed information about the construction phases, schedule,
and expected traffic impacts. Once construction begins, the team will provide weekly updates and supplemental traffic alerts to keep the public informed about progress and upcoming activities.
We will post updates here when we receive them.
