May 19th Signals Spring Cleaning Season with Opening of Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility in Bennington
Posted: May 9, 2025
Bennington, VERMONT- With the arrival of Spring comes the tradition of Spring cleaning. This year, as you sort through your cabinets, lockers, garages, and barns; Bennington County Solid Waste Alliance (BCSWA) urges you to remember that unwanted cleaning products, pesticides, and other hazardous materials are banned from the landfill and require special disposal.
On Monday, May 19th , BCSWA resumes seasonal operation of its Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facility; the place where you can safely dispose of those unwanted, toxic, poison, and flammable items.
The HHW Facility is located at the Bennington Transfer Station, 904 Houghton Lane Bennington VT. It is open on Mondays by appointment through October to residents and small businesses in southwest Vermont. Appointments can be made at the Alliance’s websiteBCSWA.org or by calling 802-442-0713, Ext. 2. A $5.00 fee is charged to residents to use the facility and rates for Small Businesses will be determined by item type, quantity, and disposal cost.
The facility is open to residents and small businesses from Arlington, Bennington, Dorset, Glastenbury, Manchester, Pownal, Rupert, Sandgate, Searsburg, Shaftsbury, Stamford, Sunderland, and Woodford.
“The facility accepts items like cleaning products, paints, pesticides, and pressurized propane tanks, cannisters, and fire extinguishers and disposes of it through safe, environmentally responsible ways that protect the health of our communities and the environment.”, said Scott Grimm-Lyon, Program Manager for the Alliance. “It’s important to remember to bring the materials in their original containers for easy identification and not to mix products together.” The facility is funded by the 13-member towns of the Alliance and supported by a $31,856 grant from the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources’ Department of Environmental Conservation.
Some area transfer stations, and retail establishments accept paint, fluorescent bulbs, used motor oil, computers and electronic waste, batteries and other materials banned from landfills year-round. For more information, visit
