Town of Shaftsbury - Public Notice of Fraudulent Mailing
Posted: December 10, 2025
The Town of Shaftsbury is alerting residents to a fraudulent letter recently sent to several community members. This letter, which "falsely appears" to come from or be associated with a legitimate lender or source, is an attempt to steal personal information from citizens.

The mailing looks like a check/waiver and asks recipients to provide sensitive data. Do not respond to this letter by calling them. Do not share any personal, financial, or identifying information. The Town of Shaftsbury did not issue this correspondence, nor is it connected to any official legitimate lender or business.

To help residents identify the scam, a copy of the
fraudulent letter has been posted on the Town’s official website.
What Residents Should Do:
Do not respond to the sender under any circumstances.
Do not provide personal information such as Social Security numbers, dates of birth, banking information, or account details.
Shred or discard the letter securely.
If you have already responded, contact the Vermont Attorney General’s Consumer Assistance Program and consider placing a fraud alert or credit freeze with the major credit bureaus.
Report suspicious mailings and scams to the Office of the
Vermont Attorney General.
Our Commitment to Residents
The Town is working proactively to notify the community and to prevent further harm. We encourage residents to stay vigilant and contact the
Vermont Attorney General with any concerns. Your safety and the protection of your personal information remain our priority.
