Important Update Regarding 2026 Property Taxes

Posted: October 21, 2026

Announcement from the Delinquent Tax Collector
In recognition of the financial challenges some Shaftsbury residents are facing due to increased property taxes and recent property reappraisals, Delinquent Tax Collector Holly Bahan has announced a temporary reduction in the delinquent tax penalty for 2026.

Property taxes are due November 10, 2026, by 5:00 PM. For this year only, the penalty on unpaid 2026 property tax principal will be reduced from **8% to 4% through December 31, 2026. Beginning January 1, 2027, any remaining unpaid principal will be assessed the additional 4% penalty.

Residents are encouraged to pay as much as possible by the November 10 deadline, as penalties apply only to the unpaid principal balance.

For questions regarding delinquent taxes, please contact Holly Bahan at (802) 379-2299 or hollybahan@shaftsburyvt.gov.

Additional Relief Announced by the Shaftsbury Select Board
At the October 19, 2026 Select Board meeting, Select Board Chair Zoe Kearl announced an additional measure to help ease the financial burden on Shaftsbury taxpayers this year.

In recognition of the challenges residents are facing, the Town will waive the 1% late fee through December 31, 2026.

The Select Board hopes that this temporary relief, together with the reduced delinquent tax penalty announced by the Delinquent Tax Collector, will provide some assistance to residents during this difficult tax year.

Please know that you are urged to pay whatever you can by the November 10th due date because you are only charged fees on your unpaid principal balance. The Treasurer will not be here on the 10th, however the Town Administrator will be checking the payment box out front at exactly 5pm.
